Numreringen av cylindrar i motorer avsedda för fordon definieras i en standard (DIN 73021).
"The cylinders are numbered consecutively 1, 2, 3 etc. in the order in which they would be intersected by an imaginary reference plane. As viewed from the end opposite the power output side, this plane is located horizontally to the left when numbering begins; the numerical assignments then proceed clockwise around the longitudinal axis of the engine. If there is more than one cynlider in a reference plane, the cylinder nearest the observer is assigned number 1, with consecutive number being assigned to the following cylinders."
