Ok, normal yellow chromate treatment gives hydrogen brittling and shouldn't be used on nuts and bolts with quality higher than 8.8 (some say that it shouldn't be used on 8.8 either if the bolts or nuts are used in critical parts like suspension, brakes etc.)

You can use method you descriped, but after adding surface you must heat parts (for example in the old oven etc.) about 200C for ½-1 an hour.

Re: 944 Turbo '87 Young man's first Porsche
Where I get my parts yellow chromated they don't do baking after the acid bath
and if I understand correctly it has to be done immediately before the hydrogen embrittlement starts and then the parts are chromated.
Guess I have to find another company to do it... that either do baking.
Are the metal parts powder coated? the finish looks great!

Re: 944 Turbo '87 Young man's first Porsche
So far we have had powder coated only the undergarriage parts, like front control arems etc. Brake booster and clutch master/slave cylinders were painted by my son using only semi gloss spray can paint.Looks quite good even though
Yesterday we put most of the rear axle components to the parts. Just need to remove hubs & torsion bars later today and then some blasting and new surface over parts; meaning ZNC, powder, paint etc. I's good even torn out & dirty parts will look really good if you use some elbow grease on them. It's much more nice to bolt on again clean parts and not dirty, rusty etc. ones.
Some pictures of yesterdays session:

Son's daily driver went through the year "besikting". This VR6 is his first car which he have owned four years. It's time for something else, so it is for sale

Just delivered 70kg various 951 parts to ZNC coating. Due the EU reculations, it's not possible to get that factory like yellowish surface anylonger(stuff is very poisonous). Shop i use make clear ZNC and a little bit lighter shade of yellow now.We decided to go with that.

Re: 944 Turbo '87 Young man's first Porsche
Really warm day today, son decided to go to local lake with his firends
So it was my job to start heater/AC unit overhaul. Car's original unit was damaged in engineroom fire, but luckily previous owner was located a spare unit from a wrecked 1988 951 originally imported to Saudi-Arabia

Unit was really dirty, full of sand and some special plants leaves, most likely from Saudi-Arabia, at least i have not seen similar leaves here in Finland.
Starting point

After disassembly

Parts looks quite good after washing

Got to buy some oem style sealing material tomorrow. After that i can put all parts back together.

When it's over 30C, it's nice to work with heater/AC unit and think about the coming winter
Putting back the flaps, which are of course upholstered, not with leather, but at least "look-a-like" vinyl.

At the same time we re-conditioned wiringharness. Old shield was in it's final stage

Jaybird hockey tape is #1 for this job ! Luckily there are two junior hockey players in the family who have suitable stuff available.

finished wiring harness

Almost ready !

951's original heater/AC unit on left reconditioned Saudi replacement unit on right

Now we can start to put the dash back again.

Re: 944 Turbo '87 Young man's first Porsche
Heater/AC unit install is near, so we checked out inside dashboard wiring. Otherwise it looked more or less OK, but wires which go to the engineroom to those big resistors were burnt more or less. Because copper wire conduct heat too good, we were forced to remove old tape a bit. After we removed a bit, we decided to remove all of it. Now it is easy to check out every single wire. We will build that damaged part and also remove badly done stereo installtion and replace it with ISO-connectors
Checking burnt part of wiring

Starting point looks quite good in the picture

But it was not so good after all. Some parts were so dry, that tape was more or less loose.

Now it is easy to make all repairs. After that we will put there few rolls of Jaybird hockey tape, as usual

Re: 944 Turbo '87 Young man's first Porsche
Had some spare time, so we started with my youngest son Peter to fabricate some "tuning" parts for eldest son's 951. We have seen several times in Jarmo's 968 turbo some B-pilar dressing items, so we wanted to have similar (or little bit better version). When you are on budjet, you do them by yourself. Well, just molds at the momet
Peter puts som gealcoat on (no masks were used, because it was very windy)

first glassfibre & epoxy added

Borrowed some hightech tools from my wife
Three sheets of glassfibre should be enough.

The finished product should look more or less like this

Just removed the first mold from the door. Peter (5 years old) did great job with gealcoat
Here's the unfinshed mold:

Re: 944 Turbo '87 Young man's first Porsche
Found a manufacturer who can produce 18" three piece forged wheels for a "student-friendly-price". If we skip 951 S oem wheels we will pick up one of these, just have to figure out which wheel to go

Re: 944 Turbo '87 Young man's first Porsche
Nice rims!
The fuchs replica would look really good with a black center (i.e black spokes) I believe.
The other one didn't look to bad either...
Would it be possible for you to mention the price on these rims and who the manufacturer are? Probably more people are interested.

Picked up about 50kg's of various parts from plater's shop. EU regulations does not allow to use old fluids which contains chrome-6, so now these parts have lighter shade of yellow surface than they used to have with "good-old-toxic" liquids.

Re: 944 Turbo '87 Young man's first Porsche
Visited friend's work shop to see how our project's new parts manufacturing get along.
New shifter was ready.Friend made several other ones for some other people as well.Nice feature is the possibility to use original Porsche parts with this short shifter

Our new transmission carrier was still under manufacturing process

Mazda RX7 oil cooler modified to fit 951

My friend was just changing oil pan gasket for a friend of his 951. He built this support to be able to remove crossmember

Great stuff!
Have you ever considered making a 968-style tranny carrier mount? I'd buy one for sure, seems there's only the 944-version available if you wanna go solid.
