We have spent some time to locate parts we need for the project. Also some clean up has been done. Most of the undercarriage parts will be either yellow passived or powder coated back to their original condition.

Project continues. Some aluminium undergarriage parts are now media blasted, and will be powder coated with clear powder. My son managed to trade his old rusty original 951 stabilistors to the new ones. I suppose guy who agreed to this deal is some kind of mental case

Got some pictures from Niklas who was the last owner of son's 951 in Sweden. Pictures were taken in 2005. We have a long way to go






Visit a friend who runs a autoglass shop. He promised to come over to my son's garage and install a new windshield to 951.
His hobby cars are old Detroit iron.




If you don't have nothing to do in your summer cottage the Finnish lake distric (little bit over 200000 lakes over there) just clean and fix some of your 951's wireing loom

Most of the parts have been powder coated and some of them are still at the platers shop to be yellow passived. Most undergarriage parts got rather dull "Platinum Grey" powder on them. We wanted to use powder coat, because it would be easier to keep these parts clean compared to "plain" aluminium. Here's picture of one control arm from where you get the idea of the color we used.

Started to restore steering rack we got from a friend. It's a total mess, but still useable. Put it to the parts, now waiting for some soda blasting for aluminium parts and fresh yellow passived surface for "tube". I found ZF repair kit from my stock of unused parts

We got a "new" brake booster from the another friend because previous owner sold the original one.

Restored clutch cylinders.Removed surface rust, then re- painted them. Since we are on tight budjet we used Mercedes W124 rubber parts, which are a direct fit also to 951. Total cost less than 10€

What kind of wear is to be expected on a steering rack, how do they go bad?

My front end is brand new with all the good parts but I still lack some of the "feel" that I imagine should be there. I suspect that the rack might be the culprit, it is the only thing left untouched, but I'm not looking forward to taking it apart...

Usually the worst thing what you could have with rack is the damaged surface of teethed saft itself. If there is deep scratches, even the new gaskets won't hold 110 bar pressurised fluid behind them. Otherwise there usually are not much to be worried about.So when you repair steering rack be sure to remove all the road dirt, dust, sand etc. from all the parts before re-assembly.

My son bought a set of '88 951 S CS wheels. Also these wheels needs to be restored. Wheels need some mechanical work and after that some kind of new surface.






Got yesterday a great pair of 964 C4 front calipers. Calipers were taken from this C4:



Calipers are (as you can see from picture) as good as new




Opinion needed; should we stay black finish or should we use "Corso Traffico" ? See the picture of GT3 set up i just rebuild:

Calipers were so sooty & rusty i wouln't like to touch them. Good old trick, citric acid, helped again

I put calipers to bath yesterday evening:



Took them for a rinse this morning. After rinse with warm water:

Disassembled calipers.Some difficulties with burnt seals, which glued pistons very effectively. Also had to use MIG-welder to couple of screws to be able to take them off. Otherwise "business-as-usual" caliper job. Now they are ready to get a new surface.

What citric acid mix do you use?

The ZNC treatment, does it have the same problem with hydrogen-brittling as normal "gulkromatering" ?

I usually put 5DL to 10L. I have not noticed any side effects after ZNC treatment, only to pressure cast zinc parts it is not friendly.
